OUR HISTORY
The Langley Association for Community Living has a long and rich history dating back to its formation in 1959. Our history is similar to that of many community living organizations in BC, having grown from the hard work and dedication of parents who had a desire to have services and supports for their family members provided in their home communities.
In our early and formative years the Association provided schooling opportunities for children that had historically been denied education in the public education system. Legislative and policy changes in the early 1960’s changed that and slowly the organization's efforts focused on post graduation services and supports for young adults.
The Langley Association for Community Living, or LACL, as we are known today, has been influenced by a number of significant events since our founding. These include the de-institutionalization of adults with a developmental disability, the shift to provision of full community supports for adults, the establishment of services for families of children and the citizenship aspirations of the individuals we serve.
Today, LACL provides a comprehensive array of services for children and youth with special needs, adults with developmental disabilities and their families in neighborhoods and communities throughout the Langley’s. We continue to be a local advocate for people with disabilities and strive to create a community that welcomes and values all citizens.
